Steve’s Story

That Was Me

When I was a Bike Messenger, there used to be this old guy, this old street drunk, in the alley where we came out the back door with our bikes. This is where that old guy lived, in the alley!  Half the time, he would ask one of us to help pull his pants up. He was so messed up, he couldn’t even get his pants up. So, in 2001, when my life fell apart and I was drinking again, I went to this AA meeting over at Second and Stewart, Christ Our Hope Catholic Church.  I had about a week sobriety going into that meeting, and that old guy in the alley was chairing the meeting.  I couldn’t believe it; there I am, a guy that had everything…hot shot bicycle racer all over the United States, living on a sailboat, racing with the big boys at 49.  That’s when I knew my way was not working.
